Cardinal

bright red cardinal perched

on a budding branch

your winter has melted away

your cousin the robin with his

bright red breast

announcing spring for days

through the open window

a mild breeze carries

your song to my eager ears

and I smile as I begin

the seasonal cleaning

while afternoon storm clouds clear

I won’t tell if

you don’t sir

the robin need not know

that you’re my favorite

winged friend

you can believe it’s so
